There's a survey out saying that because I'm past 50, I've now got my shit together. British Gas asked 2,000 adults and found that 50 is the age when people feel most confident and in control of their lives. Why British Gas is asking this rather than how to make our bills cheaper is a separate matter.

Well, why am I still Googling "how long does chicken last in the fridge?"

Only last week, I daydreamed my way past my M25 turning, making myself thirty minutes late for a meeting I didn't want to go to anyway.

Then there was the garden.

My wife wanted to get some tree surgeons in to cut the trees back. I told her not to worry about taking out a small mortgage to pay them. I'd do it.

My wife loves that bloody garden, the trees look more like bushes now.

I may have saved a fortune. But I now have a bad back, four butchered trees, and a temporary residency in the spare room.

So, to everyone who answered the survey and genuinely feels like they've got adulthood nailed by 50: fair play.

At 53, I'm still working this shit out.
